Let me share my short interview about recording, inspiration and production with Slovenian avant garde music group – Laibach.Creating music – what does it mean for you? Is it a long-term process with inspiration coming gradually or it can be spontaneously done – due to modern technology – in a few days?
Our principle of work is totally constructed and the compositional process is a dictated “ready-made:” industrial production is rationally developmental, but if we extract from this process the element of the moment and emphasize it, we also assign to it the mystical dimension of alienation, which reveals the magical component of the industrial process. Repression over the industrial ritual is transformed into a compositional dictate and the politicization of sound can become absolute sonority. Therefore for us creating of music is a long-term process that can be done in a few days.
Looking at it from a distance, how do you perceive the changing nature of recording technology?
LAIBACH excludes any evolution of the original idea; the original concept is not evolutionary but entelechial, and the presentation is only a link between this static and the changing determinant unit. We take the same stand towards the direct influence of the development of recording technology on the LAIBACH concept; of course, this influence is a material necessity but it is of secondary importance and appears only as a historical technological foundation of the moment which, in its choice is unlimited. LAIBACH expresses its timelessness with the artefacts of the present and it is thus necessary that at the intersection of politics and industrial production (the culture of art, ideology, and consciousness) it encounters the elements of both, although it wants to be both. This wide range allows LAIBACH to oscillate, creating the illusion of movement (development).
What would you keep/restore, if you could – what type of recording?
It seems that an album could be actually recorded on just one notebook with a good piece of smart software. Still I feel that it somehow sounds pretty much the same (take s works with all types of I-gadgets).
Sometimes less is more and sometimes more is more. There are no fixed rules in creation of Zeitgeist.
Do you see any connection between recording in the 60s and today, technology left aside?
In 60’ they had less technology and more music and now it is the opposite.
How do you approach marketing/promotion of your music?
Marketing/promotion is equally important as creating music, so we are approaching it as creatively as possible.
It´s possible promote and sell albums without major labels?
Of course it is, but with major labels it can sometimes be easier.
Do you still believe in a concept of album? My young friends or kids listen 60 sec from song and skip to next…can full album alive?
As all people don’t read books – but some people do, there are all kinds of music in the world today and the concept of album is still alive for certain kind of music and for certain kind of people.
What about Laibach in a next years?:)
You wait and see (and hear)…
Thank you for your time…
